Laila is an editor, writer, scholar, and translator born in Havana and based in New York. She is currently Editorial Director at The Shed.

As Managing Editor, she has overseen the leading art publications Hyperallergic and the Brooklyn Rail. Her writing has appeared in the Brooklyn Railn+1, Hyperallergic, The Good Men Project, The Feminist Wire, the Miami Rail, and Idiom, among others. This year, she wrote a specially commissioned essay for Jack Shainman Gallery on a previously unknown body of work by Barkley L. Hendricks.

Laila holds a Ph.D. in French from the Graduate Center at the City University of New York and is presently at work on a book about the artistic and literary connections between Cuba, France, and the Francophone Caribbean.
